Science fiction has less to do with science and more to do with an Essay
Science fiction has less to do with science and more to do with an endless reworking of the human condition - Essay Example Science fiction has a lot of admirers around the world. It is widely discussed and paid much attention to. It is a kind of innovative representation and reconsideration of human conditions. In accordance with Jules Verne called, his novels were ââ¬Å"voyages extraordinaireâ⬠, and H. G. Wells was writing in the field of ââ¬Å"scientific romance.â⬠It is rather difficult to understand the main idea of the authors of science fiction. On the one hand, they are focused on discussing allusions or different fake representations of different issues (Westfahl and Slusser, 2002). On the other hand, they follow the laws of the human nature development. Very often the main characters of science fiction novels are humanized. They are often very much concerned about human feelings, such as love, friendship etc. and this makes science fiction more attractive. Very often these stories gain approval of a various audience. For example, women who usually do not like such reading can also re ad these stories and not be afraid of different interesting or unreal creatures. In any case, different readers have their own chances to underline what they want to read in the science fiction books. Publishers are printing what readers will like for sure. There is no doubt that the authors of science fiction books introduce an innovative vision and creative ideas. It is surely a literature of change. For example, in the novels by Isaac Asimov humanity is fighting against the fall of the Galactic Empire. This author made an attempt to popularize science. Thanks to his creative mind he managed to represent the issue of biochemistry in a popular manner. He followed his scientific logic and managed to represent it to the readers in a comprehensible manner. He wanted to understand a possible future of the generations that concerned human ability to rule their future empires. He turned his attention to so-called scientific sociology. In case mankind colonizes galaxy, it will be very

Outback Steakhouse Case Essay Example for Free
Outback Steakhouse Case Essay Outback has clearly defined strategic goals that give a clear sense of where the company is headed in the future. The company intends to drive its future growth though a four pronged strategy. First, they want to continue to expand in the U.S. with an additional 300-350 Outback concept restaurants. They also plan to develop a second system of franchise restaurants called Carabbas. After that, the founders may develop additional themed restaurants, and branch out into international franchising. To achieve these goals, several operational goals have been defined. The owners will continue to focus on the development of Outback, because ââ¬Å"there is still a lot of work left to do there.â⬠Also, expanding Outback to greater levels will provide a strong foundation for the Carabbas venture. As Joe Coffer said, ââ¬Å"I see [Outback] as the McDonaldââ¬â¢s of the future, except a step up.â⬠The operational strategy right now is to continue expanding Outback operations, and continuing to build their reputation as the premier mid-level steakhouse. There are many standing plans outlined in the text, but two of note deal with the promotional strategy and staff training. All job candidates for the restaurant staff are required to pass an aptitude test that assesses basic skills such as making change. Also, every candidate is interviewed by two people, and undergoes psychological profiling. With regards to promotion, Outback does local advertising on billboards and TV, but most of their promotion is done through community involvement. Actions speak louder than words, and the founders know that ââ¬â their community involvement helps ââ¬Å"build friends and an image of great food at a great price.â⬠A single use plan was put into effect when the company needed additional venture capital to fund Outbackââ¬â¢s early stages. They planned to offer a portion of the company for public sale. A project schedule was developed, outlining exactly what was needed for the plan to be a success. They needed to raise at least 1.5 million to finance the purchase of equipment for the next year. They wanted to sell enough stock, priced at about 20% of the highest restaurant stock, to finance about 18 months of operation. Their well-defined project schedule paid off, and by 1994, sixty-eight million dollars were raised. 1. The Outback Steakhouse uses various types of controls that ensure high quality, efficiency, and customer satisfaction. One feedforward control has been the development of the Outback kitchen. Bob Basham designed the kitchen for peak efficiency, occupying 45% of the area of the restaurant. Bob decided that by overdesigning the kitchen and underdesigning the dining area, the restaurant is better able to operate during times of peak demand, while maintaining a high level of quality. Controls are also used while the restaurant is in operation. The ratio of servers to customers at Outback is much lower than at the typical restaurant, and this is the key to Outbackââ¬â¢s outstanding customer service. Outback employees typically only handle three tables at a time, so customers are served more quickly, and donââ¬â¢t feel rushed when ordering. Feedback controls are used when a new restaurant is opened and new employees are hired. The restaurant staff has four practice nights when charity events are held or the local media are entertained, before the restaurant is actually opened to the public. This gives the new employees some experience, but also provides a basis for discussion afterwards. By discussing the events of the practice nights, areas requiring improvement can be identified before the restaurant is open to the public. In a way, this is both a feedback and a feedforward control. External controls are not used extensively at Outback because of the relati vely informal organizational structure. Of course, company policy and procedures would be outlined during the orientation process, but there is not always a manager or supervisor watching you. The closest thing to external control outlined in the case would be Tim Gannonââ¬â¢s meeting and training sessions ââ¬â upper management ensuring that the front-liners are behaving in a way that is consistent with the Outback philosophy. Internal controls are emphasized at Outback, through self-directed learning and personal growth. Trudy Cooper calls it the ââ¬Å"learn-teach-learn approach.â⬠As Chris Suiilvan explains, ââ¬Å"Outback gives people a lot of opportunity to make some mistakes, learn, and go on.â⬠2. Both positional and personal power are utilized at Outback. The attention that Outback employees get during the hiring and training process would fall under legitimate power. The people that are training the new employees are experienced, knowledgeable workers the new employees are clearly their subordinates. However, aptitude testing and one-on-one training would make them feel important. Such attention can be strenuous and intimidating, but in the long-run this attention would send the message that the company cares and wants you to excel. Referent power is one of the most beneficial types of power to have in an organization, but is also one of the most difficult to create. At the ten meetings per year that Tim Gannon holds with staff members, referent power is utilized because Tim sounds like a cool guy. Employees work hard for him because he earns their respect and people want him to like them. Also, experience power would be present because of Timââ¬â¢s extensive management knowledge and experience. People respect him because of the years he has invested in Outback. On the positional power side, reward power is used almost exclusively. Outback has provided ownership opportunities at three levels: at the individual restaurant level, through joint venture and franchise opportunities, and though the employee stock option plan. The first two opportunities require an initial investment, but the return is excellent. The stock option plan, I think, is an excellent idea, because it benefits everyone, and rewards loyalty and hard work. You are rewarded in proportion to what you have contributed to the success of the venture.

Prostitution, Motherhood, and Full Equality :: Essays Papers
Prostitution, Motherhood, and Full Equality Just as the needs of individuals change over time, so do the needs of social movements. Leaders come and go. Tactics change from time to time. But the goal always remains the same. While the movement to secure equal rights for the American Negro needed different leaders and different tactics at different times during its history, so it was with the women's movement in America. While the movement initially sought equal treatment for women in everything, the struggle required changes in both leadership and in tactics before the goal was achieved. Early in the history of the movement there was Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Starting with a relative handful of elitist, well-educated female activists, they declared that the right to vote was necessary to make men and women equal under the law and in every facet of daily life. Later, when alliance with other political and social reform movements was made necessary to further the goals of the movement, there was Jane Addams. The argument changed to one of the American woman needing the vote in order to better the daily lives of their families, their friends, and their society. But the goal was always the same: equality for men and women. Equality eventually symbolized by the right to vote. The early women's movement was dominated by an uncompromising attitude of right versus wrong. This attitude came from the involvement of this same segment of society in the abolitionist movement. While intellectually appealing, in "Not Wards of the Nation: The Struggle for Women's Suffrage," William H. Chafe tells us that early women's rights advocates "were generally dismissed as a 'class of wild enthusiasts and visionaries' and received little popular support (Oates 153). One of the founders of this movement was Elizabeth Cady Stanton. At Seneca Falls, New York, in 1848, Stanton helped draft a Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions. In it, the advocates of women's rights accused "mankind" of "repeated injuries and usurpations" toward women. They said that men had "oppressed them on all sides." And they demanded equal access to education, the trades, professions, and an end to the double standards that existed for men and women. Only by doing away with laws that "restricted women's freedom or placed her in a position inferior to men" could women achieve equality (153). The daughter of a judge, Stanton had first hand knowledge of the plight of women in the judicial system of the United States.

Essay on Voltaires Candide - Fallacy of Optimism Exposed
Fallacy of Optimism Exposed in Candide In Candide, Voltaire paints a dismal and satirical view of the world. Voltaire paints a pessimistic portrait of a naà ¯ve youth who is raised to believe that this is best of all worlds. Time and again, Voltaire clearly portrays his belief that this is not the best of all possible worlds. à The characters of the story face great adversity. In chapter 10, Cunegonde states that her misfortune is so great that she does not see how the old woman's story of woe can surpass her own. In chapters 11 and 12 the old woman then goes onto tell of her misfortune. When she finishes Candide and Cunegonde are amazed at the hard times this woman has faced. At the proposal of the old woman, Candide and Cunegonde ask others on the ship relate their adventures, and sure enough, the others on the boat have stories that can match or surpass Cunegonde's tale of woe. à Throughout most of the book, Voltaire pokes fun at Leibniz's that according to the hierarchical structure of monads that this is best of all possible worlds. Candide and Pangloss are the main characters used to satirize the belief that this is the best of all possible worlds. Pangloss is a blind optimist; he refused to see things being anything other than the best. No matter what sort of natural disaster or misfortune falls upon someone Pangloss heralds it is being for the best.à Candide-the naà ¯ve follower of Pangloss-is first a blind follower of Pangloss, but eventually comes to reject his teachings. In chapter 3 after meeting John the Anabaptist, Candide affirms, "now I am convinced that my Master Pangloss told me truth when he said that everything was for the best in this world." However, in the beginning of Chapter 4 only few p... ...t this is not the best of all possible worlds. Though some good things happen along their adventures, Candide's fellow adventurers face great misfortune. Eventually they are forced to live a life of labor-not at all befitting their noble ancestry. Though greatly disappointed with their outcome all but Candide insist on claiming that all is for the best. The complete absurdity that one could go through as much and end up in the place where they end up and still claim that all was for the best furthers Voltaire's belief in the fallacy of systematic optimism. à Works Cited and Consulted: Frautschi, R.L. Use of Ethos, Pathos, and Logos on Social Networking Sites Essay
Social networking sites leave opportunities for vulnerability, however, I donââ¬â¢t believe many youths are an easy target. Using ethos, pathos and logos individuals can create their own reality to relate to the internet world who they think are and how they wish to be seen. In mediated publics such as Facebook and Instagram, the user has complete control of his or her profile and is the only one who can allow content about his/herself to be shared. It is my personal belief that as technology has evolved many people have taken to fabricating some truths here and there and omitting details to give an ideal representation of who they are without incriminating themselves or leaving themselves vulnerable for mistreatment. The fantasy of what is or could be is more desirable than reality. In the past few years, privacy settings have been adapted to cover the growing technological advances to keep users safe from online predators. In the beginning, Facebook was a free for all. It is my impression that everyone was so excited about this new mediated public and therefore wanted to use the application to its fullest, trying out every function it offered. My younger brother, unripe and fresh out of high school did not know the repercussions of his publications as most people didnââ¬â¢t really think about it. It wasnââ¬â¢t until a very incriminating photo was posted by his now ex-girlfriend, of Rob, smiling in a tree, that he thought twice about what he shared online. The photo was so big you had to scroll down to see the whole image. He was actually climbing a tree with his pants down around his ankles. The photo was taken from ground level, and in fact he was very high up. He bent slightly forward holding on to the sturdy trunk to steady... ...own Facebook account and be ââ¬Å"friendsâ⬠with their students to keep them safe like Boyd recommends. Instead, I believe by talking to students and children about how their posts directly impact their reality is a more effective approach in teaching how to prevent and remedy any inflictions that will be caused by adolescent lapses in judgment. Just as my brother has never posted another indecent photo and learned to limit his online profile content, people do learn from their mistakes. Educators should have an open door policy fortified by trust between themselves and their children in order to guide them in making appropriate decisions. Dispostional Personality Theories Essay
The two most common dispositional theories are Allportââ¬â¢s psychology of the individual theory and the trait and factor theory. Allportââ¬â¢s psychology of the individual theory emphasized that people are unique, even though they may share traits in common, and those unique qualities are what should be focused on. ââ¬Å"More than any other personality theorist, Gordon Allport emphasized the uniqueness of the individual. He believed that attempts to describe people in terms of general traits rob them of their unique individualityâ⬠. In order to focus on the individuals uniqueness Allport felt that a broad theory is more useful than a narrow one and he would use information from different theorist in his research. For many years there has been much debate about how many traits actually have an effect on an individualââ¬â¢s personality. In recent years the majority of theorist have come to the conclusion that five is the magic number. Esyneck, McCrae, and Costa have focused their studies on the trait and facto theory and have done much research using standardized tests, clinical observations, and observations from friends and families of the individuals studied. ââ¬Å"Trait and factor theories of personality are based on factor analysis, a procedure that assumes that human traits can be measured by correlational studiesâ⬠. Each of these theories have different approaches to explaining an individualââ¬â¢s behavior. Both Allportââ¬â¢s psychology of the individual theory and the trait and factor theory have its own effect on individual personalities. Interpersonal relationships are influenced by each of these theories in its own way as well.
